I've been working at the Australian Antarctic Divison for about 3 weeks now. In that time I've done dentistry for thrill seekers (not to be confused with an actual dentistry degree or skill level) and physiotherapy. I've also been kitted out with my fabulous bumble bee and other assorted warm goodies so that I can stay toasty while down South. Our pre-departure training starts in earnest over the next few days. We'll see how all of that goes. Realising that you're about to be the only doctor with no evacuation option makes you that much more aware of your own limitations. Unfortunately there isn't time to become a FACEM, FRACGP, FRACS, FRACA before I depart. Not really sure that having those letters after my name would necessarily prepare me for the job any better.
It's 6 weeks until I fly down to McMurdo. From McMurdo, the Americans will fly me in their Hercules to the Casey ski-way. Sounds simple enough, but half of the flights get cancelled each season because of poor weather. I will go south, charmingly referred to as "inserted", but it's in the hands of the weather gods exactly when that will be.
I love Hobart. I love Tasmania. It feels like I've come home. While I wait to go to Casey, there are plenty of trails competing for my attention.
I miss everyone, especially knowing how much you would all love to join me on this adventure. Maybe next season?
